Chapter 316: A Huge Sum of Money
Chapter 316: A Huge Sum of Money
Cara Preston’s face darkened the moment she saw Jack Judd. It was this bastard who’d made her spend a night at the police station, and her reputation was in tatters when she got out!
Although she had tried many tactics afterward, she still couldn’t salvage the situation. Because of that incident, she fumbled when handling a series of subsequent matters, which left her increasingly on the defensive.
That was why Cara Preston hated Jack Judd to the bone!
She said coldly, "Who are you calling your wife? Get lost!"
Jack Judd’s eyes filled with hurt. "Wifey, don’t be so harsh! My feelings for you are true, I’m crazy about you!"
Cara Preston felt so disgusted by his words that she wanted to throw up. She never would have thought that trying to harm Vera Xavier at the breakfast shop would end up attracting such a huge nuisance!
Jack Judd ignored her furious expression and, as if presenting a treasure, whipped out a bankbook for her to see. "Wifey, just take a look at how much money is in here! Let me tell you, as long as you agree to marry me, all the money in this book is yours!"
Cara Preston utterly despised Jack Judd, but she would never turn her nose up at money. She was also a little curious just how much a punk like him could have, so she glanced at it out of the corner of her eye. She was shocked by the number she saw.
She took a closer look—it was indeed 400,000!
In those days, an ordinary house only cost around forty thousand. Four hundred thousand was an absolute fortune!
She looked again—to her surprise, the name on the bankbook was Rona Langdon!
No matter how good she was at putting on an act, she couldn’t hide her shock and astonishment at that moment and couldn’t help but glance in Rona Langdon’s direction.
Rona Langdon had been on edge the whole time, but when she saw Cara Preston’s look, something suddenly clicked. She rushed forward and snatched the bankbook away. "This is my bankbook!"
Jack Judd immediately protested. "Hey lady, have some decency. I found this bankbook. It has four hundred thousand in savings, and the account name is Rona Langdon. How are you going to prove that you’re Rona Langdon?"
The moment he said that, the Langdons stared at the bankbook like a pack of hungry wolves spotting a lamb.
Rona Langdon immediately stuffed the bankbook down her shirt. "What nonsense are you spouting? There’s nowhere near that much money in there! It’s clearly only four thousand!"
Then she added loudly, "And another thing, I am Rona Langdon! They can all vouch for me!"
Jack Judd rolled up his sleeves. "You’re all clearly in this together, so why should I believe you? Besides, it clearly says four hundred thousand, but you say it’s four thousand. That alone is enough to prove the bankbook isn’t yours!"
Rona Langdon inwardly hated Jack Judd’s guts, wishing she could just shut his mouth. ’If the other Langdons find out I have this much money, they’ll be hounding me for it every other day!’
She leaped to her feet, screaming, "What kind of crap are you spouting? I’m telling you, Cara is my daughter! You want to marry my daughter, yet you talk to me like this? I’m going to beat you to death!"
With that, she took off her shoe, grabbed it with her uninjured hand, and started trying to smack Jack Judd with it.
Seeing that his mission was complete, Jack Judd knew there was no need to get tangled up with this unreasonable madwoman. He dodged and ran away, shouting, "Shit! How can my sweet little Cara have a shrew for a mother like you! You’re definitely not her real mom!"
Enraged, Rona Langdon threw the shoe at his head, but he had already dashed off, and it went wide.
