Chapter 325: The Path of Escape

Chapter 325: The Path of Escape

In the nineties, Crestfall Station was still small and its facilities rather basic. From the waiting room, you could clearly see everything happening in the plaza out front.

A police car on patrol pulled to a stop in the plaza.

When Cara Preston saw this, a plan formed in her mind. She sidled up to Rona Langdon and said with a nervous look on her face, "Mom, the police are here."

Rona Langdon’s legs went weak when she heard that. Fortunately, Cara Preston was quick to steady her, keeping her from collapsing.

Cara Preston whispered, "Mom, what do we do?"

Rona Langdon glanced at the clock in the waiting room. "The train will be here in a little over ten minutes. Let’s go hide in the restroom for a bit."

Cara Preston nodded, and the two of them slipped into the restroom.

’Rona Langdon was on edge. But even so, she didn’t regret taking the money one bit. With this cash, she could still take a gamble. Without it, the rest of her life would be nothing but misery.’

She took a deep breath, trying to calm her nerves.

While in the restroom, she heard the station announcement: the train she had tickets for was now arriving. She let out a huge sigh of relief, called out to Cara Preston, and the mother-daughter pair emerged from the restroom, making a beeline for the ticket gate.

A few uniformed police officers walked through the waiting room. Rona Langdon instinctively turned away, hiding her face from their view.

The mother and daughter made it through the ticket gate without issue and then dashed straight for the train.

A holdover from the mindset of the sixties and seventies, people would rush onto the train, even if it was stopped for a good while and they had assigned seats.

Those without tickets feared they wouldn’t find a good place to stand, while those with tickets worried there’d be no room for their luggage.

That’s why in that era, at any train station in any city, for any arriving train, the scene of passengers boarding was always a spectacle. The moment the gates opened, everyone would sprint inside.

Rona Langdon and Cara Preston had standing-room-only tickets. The train was packed. One of them was too heavy to run fast, and the other, pampered since birth, was weighed down with bags. They both tried to push forward, but how could they possibly outrun the young and able-bodied passengers?

So, once they boarded, they were crammed by the doorway, completely unable to push their way inside.

Rona Langdon’s hand, which Vera Xavier had broken, still hadn’t healed. She also had a large bag slung over her shoulder. Standing there in the crowd, the bag was incredibly cumbersome and bumped into a few tall men standing nearby. They shot Rona Langdon a vicious glare.

Normally, Rona Langdon would have glared right back, but she was a fugitive now. How could she dare to provoke anyone? She was as meek as a lamb.

Cara Preston said softly, "Mom, take the bag off. Your hand is hurt. I’ll hold it for you!"

Rona Langdon actually trusted Cara Preston a great deal. ’Besides,’ she thought, ’Cara and I are in this together. We’re already on the train, so it’s fine to let her hold the bag.’

So Rona Langdon nodded, slipped the bag off her shoulder, and handed it to Cara Preston.

Just as Cara Preston took the bag, the train’s departure bell rang. Her eyes narrowed. As the conductor moved to close the doors, she suddenly slung the bag over her shoulder and leaped right off the train.

The conductor was a little surprised, but it was time for the train to leave, so he simply shut the doors.

As the doors closed, the train slowly began to move forward.
