Chapter 446 - 448: Jeanette Kensington Has a Favor to Ask
"My sister-in-law recently took over the Kenway Group. I heard the company’s net profit has been rising steadily and they’re already out of crisis. She’s amazing! I need to learn as much as I can from her!"
Jenna Shaw said at the dinner table.
Jonathan Shaw nodded. "You really should learn from your sister-in-law. Just taking on the mess that was the Kenway Group showed incredible courage. So many people are content with an easy life, but she had the guts and drive to take over the Kenway Group and bring it back from the dead. A person like that is worthy of respect, no matter where you go."
Sarah Hughes said with a gentle smile, "When your sister-in-law has some free time, you can go hang out with her. Take her out and about so she can relax a bit. The pressure of running a company is immense."
Jenna Shaw nodded, then stiffly raised her head, realizing Jane Chandler hadn’t said a word the entire time.
Jane Chandler usually disliked any mention of Naomi Kenway at the dinner table, especially after being rebuffed by her several times.
"Mom?" Jenna Shaw called out cautiously.
Jane Chandler seemed to snap out of a daze. She spooned up some white porridge and took a slow, deliberate sip.
After a moment, she said, "She certainly has some extraordinary qualities."
The ability to take on the Kenway family’s mess and revive the company was completely beyond Jane Chandler’s expectations. She had originally thought Naomi Kenway was just a pretty face who liked the limelight of the entertainment industry, but now she saw that wasn’t the case at all.
Naomi Kenway had done what she could only dream of doing.
Years ago, the Chandler Family had faced a major crisis. Jane Chandler had been secretly frantic but helpless. She wanted to do something but lacked the power, and no matter how unwilling she was to accept it, she could only swallow her frustration. It wasn’t until she married Jonathan Shaw that the Chandler Family, under the protection of the Shaw Family, slowly began to recover.
Jenna Shaw’s eyes widened in surprise. "Mom, you’re..."
Coming from Jane Chandler, calling someone "extraordinary" was the highest form of praise. Back then, the only person to receive such a compliment from her was her pride and joy, her son Ethan Shaw. Even Jenna Shaw had never received a proper compliment from her.
"I did underestimate her before. She’s far more capable than I imagined."

Jeanette Kensington was holed up in her small apartment. She couldn’t get any bookings, and no one would fund a concert for her anymore. Even if she held one, only a handful of fans would show up. She knew she couldn’t go on like this. She had to find a job to support herself and Lorraine Warren, but TV directors looked down on her, and she was too proud to be a dance instructor at a studio. As a result, she still hadn’t found a suitable job.
After who knows how long of this, Jeanette Kensington could no longer stand such a mediocre existence. ’I’m supposed to be a glamorous superstar, not just getting by day to day like this.’
After a long time of psyching herself up, Jeanette Kensington called Jack Cross. Jack had been her fawning lapdog for a long time. As the junior director of an entertainment company, he had often helped Jeanette solve many of her problems.
It was only then that Jeanette Kensington remembered they hadn’t been in touch for a long time. Jack Cross used to send her dozens of messages a day, but now that she was in such deep trouble, he hadn’t even reached out to offer a few words of comfort.
Before, she would have never been the one to call him.
The call finally connected after a long time. Jack Cross’s voice was as flippant as ever, but there was a subtle difference to it.
"Hello? Who’s this?"
"It’s me."
"Who are you?"
Jeanette Kensington suppressed her anger. "Who do you think it is? It’s only been a few days and you’ve already forgotten me?"
"Oh, so it’s the Eldest Miss Kensington. I didn’t check the caller ID. To what do I owe the pleasure, Your Highness?"
"I want to get back into the entertainment industry. You’re going to help me."
A snort of laughter came from the other end. "Help you? Sure. Come on over. I’ll help you when you get here."
A wave of displeasure washed over Jeanette Kensington, but she remembered she was the one asking for a favor, so she agreed.
Following the address Jack Cross sent, Jeanette Kensington arrived only to find it was a private club.
Jeanette Kensington pushed open the door to the private room and saw a chaotic scene of men and women. A few of the faces were familiar to her.
Her stomach churned, and Jeanette Kensington fought back the urge to vomit.
"What are you standing there stunned for? Get in here!"
Jeanette Kensington walked over and saw Jack Cross sitting in the very center, his arms wrapped around two women, one on each side.
The disgust in Jeanette Kensington’s heart intensified. "Did you call me to a place like this just to disgust me?!"
"Disgust you? Why are you still so high and mighty? You really think you’re still some pampered princess? Wake up! You’re just a bastard born to two lowlifes, and a bastard born out of wedlock at that!" After saying this, Jack Cross burst out laughing.
"When you were a princess, I put you on a pedestal. It was all for the thrill of the chase. And now? What do you have left to make me obsessed with you? You look down on the women with me, but how are you any better than them now?"
Unable to bear it any longer, Jeanette Kensington walked up and slapped Jack Cross across the face.
Jack Cross’s eyes turned red with rage.
"You dare hit me? I’ll teach you a lesson you won’t forget! You bitch, I’ve had enough of you! Even when you were with me, you were always thinking about that pretty boy Caleb Bishop. You never even treated me like a human being!"
He ordered the people next to him, "Quick, show her what happens when she messes with me!"
As several men closed in on her, Jeanette Kensington finally felt a pang of fear. One of them tackled her to the ground, and someone started forcefully tearing at her clothes.
Jeanette Kensington screamed. She ripped off her high-heeled shoe and smashed it violently into the person in front of her. Her movements grew more and more frantic, until a few drops of blood splattered onto her face.
The people around her froze, wondering if she had gone insane.
Seizing the opportunity, Jeanette Kensington ran out barefoot. She hastily hailed a cab and went home.
It was only then that all her strength finally deserted her. She squatted by her front door and began to sob helplessly.
Her once-perfect life had been turned upside down, and everyone around her was kicking her while she was down before abandoning her one by one.
’She suddenly thought of Jackson Kensington and Lorraine Warren, of the happy times their family of three had shared. Why have things come to this? My parents are both still here, so why has everything changed...?’
Suddenly, Lorraine Warren’s anxious voice came from beside her. Jeanette hadn’t seen her for a few days, and she looked as if she had aged several years. A few new wrinkles lined her once well-maintained face, and strands of white were mixed in her hair. Her clothes were wrinkled, and the bag slung over her shoulder looked like something bought from a street stall.
Jeanette Kensington jumped in surprise. She wasn’t that stingy with Lorraine Warren. There was only one explanation for where her expensive bags and jewelry had gone...
Sure enough.
"My precious daughter, I’m begging you, please, I’m begging you as your mother! Just give me another million—no, five hundred thousand! Just another five hundred thousand is all I need!"
